Thanks for taking the time to look at my site. I am researcher and lecturer in literacy, linguistics and semiotics. My research interests include multimodality, social semiotics and systemic functional linguistics. I have worked in literacy education, digital media and visual communication in Australia and in English language education in Germany, with a focus on English for Academic Purposes and English of Architects and Civil Engineers. I am interested in contemporary discourse practices, especially as they relate to education and positive social change.

I am an experienced educator, having taught at six universities and one business college in both Australia and Germany over the past ten years. My areas of teaching specialisation are language & academic literacy, visual communication & semiotics, EAP, English for Special Purposes, TESOL and Business English. I also have 12 years’ experience as a proofreader (specialising in doctoral theses and other academic manuscripts) and 2 years’ experience as a translator (German-English).

My research has a social justice focus, and I’m interested in harnessing the tools of SFL, social semiotics and multimodality to improve access to higher education for speakers of other languages and students from regional backgrounds. I am also interested in using linguistics and social semiotics to explore contemporary discourse practices, especially as they relate to positive social change. I’ve worked on an NCSEHE-funded project aimed at helping people from regional, rural and remote locations in Australia work towards their goals in higher education. I have also worked on a linguistic analysis of Acknowledgements of Country, in order to help make them more meaningful and accountable. In addition to this, I helped design the curricula for schools in East Timor for the educational charity BETTER (Building East Timor Through Education & Resources).
